ESOL Lunchtime Showcase – ‘Addressing Trauma in the Classroom: Beyond Language’
December 4, 2023 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Lunchtime Showcase event in partnership with Emma Taylor from Migration Yorkshire.
The Lunchtime Showcase series recognises the important and exciting work being done by ESOL practitioners and others across our region to support people to develop their language and associated skills in different ways. Our events will provide an insight into this work by providing a platform for people to share good practice and ideas, and to discuss key issues and challenges around specific themes.
Join us online to discuss the theme ‘Addressing trauma in the classroom: Beyond Language’. This session provides continuation from the theme of our September showcase. In response to feedback on that session, we are focusing here on techniques for addressing trauma in the lower-level ESOL classroom. We will explore ways of creating safe learning spaces, working with learners who are less able to communicate their trauma to fellow students and tutors, and practical tips on resources and activities that can be used in the Pre Entry/Entry 1 classroom.
We are delighted that Lora Agbaso, ESOL practitioner with professional and lived experience of forced migration, will join us again to develop some of her ideas presented at our September session. In addition, we will be joined by Rachel Öner, NATECLA national co-chair and ESOL practitioner with experience of addressing trauma in the classroom. Lora and Rachel will present and engage in discussion with the participants at a time when many ESOL practitioners are addressing these issues in their work and beyond.
