Children in care and care leavers: The Big Ask

The Children’s Commissioner for England has published a report focussing on the responses from children and young people in care to The Big Ask survey asking them about their lives.

Findings from 5,936 responses from children in care aged 6-17 include: 63% of those aged 9-17 said they were happy with life overall; 23% were unhappy with their mental health, 20% were unhappy with the choice of things to do in their local area and 19% were unhappy with their life at school and college.

Of children in care aged 6-8, 89% said they were happy with life overall.

Getting the right support when leaving care was important for older children and young adults, but many of the responses to the survey indicated that this rarely happened.
