Can you help ensure that young people have a voice?

  • Help them to vote in the ‘Your Voice Your Vote’ annual vote for young people’s priority issues
  • Help them to vote for the name of the Youth Zone.

Hello,

I hope you are all doing well.

I appreciate the way we are all connecting with the children and young people we work with is very different at the moment.  I also appreciate the time and energy you give to ensuring they are supported in their right have a voice and be heard in decisions that affect them (Article 12 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child). I am asking for your help in ensuring we are able to represent as many young people as possible in the ‘Your Voice Your Vote’ annual vote for young people’s priority issues and voting for the name of the Youth Zone.

It is the time of year again where we ask for a little of your help to influence a lot of impact for young people aged 11-19 years through Your Voice Your Vote.  I have planned this to be as efficient and take as little time and effort for you as possible to give the children and young people you work with the opportunity to have their voices heard and influence priorities and decisions that will impact on their lives locally.  The results will also be sent nationally to help with the work of the British Youth Council UK Youth Parliament.  Last year’s report is attached for your information.

This year young people have the addition of being able to choose which name and brand young people would like to see on the upcoming OnSide Youth Zone planned for Grimsby.  This will be a state-of-the-art facility providing young people aged 8-19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs, with somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. Young people in the area have been busy so far this year in creating two options for the name and brand of the Youth Zone.  They are asking for your pupils to vote on which they prefer as this is going to be ‘their’ Youth Zone.  More information and images along with the tally sheet are attached.  They have created a film for you to show to young people to help with voting https://youtu.be/Jpp6_66dCbQ

Due to the restrictions that Covid-19 has brought about we are planning on trying to gather the votes in a slightly different way (for some of you) to previous years.

We have created a quick link for each of the votes, voting should take just a few minutes.

There are a number of ways you could help to give the young people you connect with a vote.  You could :

  • Post the link on your social media with a short post giving young people who follow you the option to take a couple of minutes to influence the priorities for the area from young people and/or the name and brand for the Youth Zone.
  • Share the link with more information in an email
  • Send the young people’s vote in for them using the links whilst you are having a planned connection with them.
  • Voting is open to 25th October 2020.  Results should be available from November 2020

Voting is also being encouraged in schools and colleges, youth groups and projects working with young people.

The results will be sent automatically through the link as soon as they are submitted. Once we have the results we will create and share a summary report of the views of all young people locally. The results  of Your Voice Your Vote are used by our local youth social action group, Youth Action, shared with full council and children and lifelong learning scrutiny panel for them to consider the priorities from young people and use this to help them plan too.

Rather than coming to you separately we hope that by sending the voting options as a joint opportunity, it will save lots of time and energy whilst still giving as many young people as possible the opportunity to have their say on this.

Everything we think you need to do the voting is attached to this email.   If there is anything you might need to help you share and encourage young people you work with to vote over the coming 5 weeks please get in touch and I will do all I can to help. Feel free to share this email and links to others you know who are working with young people in the area.

Many thanks as always for your support.
